BRIDE OF DIAZ PATRICIA WILSON MILLS AND BOON 1 BRIDE OF DIAZ PATRICIA WILSON CHAPTER ONE It was hot, the whole day blazing with that extraordinary light that was characteristic of this part of Spain, a combination of searing heat, clear mountain air and a high, blue, cloudless sky. Laura stopped her car for a moment to gaze across the clear, shallow river to the mountains beyond. There was more than beauty in their towering height; the high peaks seemed to throw a benediction across the land, a peace that came from their awesome strength, and she breathed a sigh of contentment. She had done the right thing in coming here, she was sure of it. It was a deep feeling of certainty, almost a homecoming. There was a village some miles away, but she could see it as if it were close at hand. The amazing light seemed to bring everything so close that the white monastery on the distant crags might have been just down the road instead of far away in a village that was probably neither sizeable nor important. In her drive through Spain she had come to dismiss the impossible and replace it with the thought that it was more than likely. It was a land of magic where the past and present merged, where the dark and the light rode side by side as quiet companions. A few miles inland from the brash coastal resorts that catered for tourists, the real Spain waited, unchanged in so many ways, shrugging off the mantle of the twentieth century with ease, and she realised as she stared at the distant monastery that she was now very much alone in that older, more romantic Spain. The thought brought a shiver of excitement and anticipation, and a glow to her face that would have surprised her former colleagues in England. Sister Laura Marsh, as nervous as any schoolgirl, delighted with the start of an adventure, dreaming dreams of the romantic past. She was almost fiercely glad that she had come, that she had taken a chance and put everything aside to escape from the inevitability of where life was leading. She started the engine and her brilliantly blue eyes turned to the sparkling river that gushed over the stones of the shallow ford. Once across, she would be approaching the mountains, travelling on a road that led through huge forests of pine and Spanish oak, the beginning of the vast Montanas estate where she would be working for the foreseable future. It would be very different from her work in the busy hospital in London, and she was not without some inner fears as she turned the car on to the narrow road that ran like a white ribbon up into the foothills before disappearing into the trees. From here, the forest seemed dark, forbidding, alarming, but the sunshine was hot on her arms, it caught the astonishing fairness of her hair, turning it almost to silver. She drove slowly across the ford, her delicate and beautiful face set in the lines of determination that her friends knew so well. She would face whatever lay ahead of her. She had come here with her eyes wide open and nothing could be so frightening as the prospect of a marriage that was slowly and inevitably being forced on her by wellmeaning friends and by David. She needed time to think, to look at things from another angle, and here was certainly a place which would shake her out of any lethargy that had been slowly strangling her. She would know soon enough if her affection for David was merely the

PATRICIA WILSON. Laura's eyes widened with growing fear as the horse plunged closer, but it was. Not the colour or the size of the animal that alarmed her, it was the man himself.
